Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Butterflies

American Copper, Lycaena phlaeas. Another name for them is Flame Copper. They are small and vivid.Common buckeye, Junonia coenia. This one kept leaping ahead of us on the path and required some very careful stalking.

  1. Great shot of the common buckeye! Butterflies can be terribly hard to photograph.

    1. Thanks. This one kept getting away from the camera, but it maintained a relatively straight-line in its getaway, constantly moving ahead of us on the path, until finally I got close enough long enough to take a couple shots. Then it essentially disappeared.
